Medical tourism has existed since the dawn of civilization, with records of people from Roman times visiting countries such as Turkey and Switzerland to access hot volcanic waters for healing purposes.
The modern equivalent has been driven primarily by access to information on the internet.
Patients scour the web for treatments on foreign shores — ranging from heart operations to cosmetic procedures — typically at a higher quality and lower cost compared to what is offered in their home countries.
Chris Pochiba is a social media influencer who traveled to South Korea for laser eye surgery in 2022. His wife, Sara Aho, explained why they chose South Korea, instead of other destinations.
“A lot of countries in the world have the same technology. But Korea is known for being very high tech, it’s very clean, very hygienic, very professional, and a little bit familiar,” Aho said.
Indeed, more Americans are opting to seek treatment in the likes of Mexico, Costa Rica, India and Thailand, where their average cost savings are in the range of 45% to 90%.
The Covid-19 pandemic, however, halted international travel — and, by extension, patient inflows — disrupting what was at the time a booming industry worth more than billion.
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom.
“We came back with less people, made more revenue than 2019, last year of 2022,” Paul McTaggart, CEO and founder of medical travel agency Medical Departures, told CNBC.
Paul added: “As you’re seeing inflation at the pump, at the grocery store, you’re also seeing it at the hospital. The price of medicine and dental care has gone up and we’ve been a benefactor of that.”

Wanna know the REAL medical cost in malaysia?
Then you need to look at – Private Healthcare and Facilities Act 2006, 13th Schedule.
It has been 12 long years, and the last Fee schedule in force (the MMA 4th schedule) was in 2002, and this was incorporated into the Private Healthcare and Facilities Act 2006, 13th Schedule.
The medical fee schedule (which translates to hospitalization, treatment & surgical procedure costs) spells out the maximum allowable fees charged by the medical profession for consultations and procedures.
It is very different from other professional fee schedules like the lawyers which spells out the minimum fees to be charged (obviously the lawyers are cleverer than doctors in this respect)
Nevertheless, the reality is that market forces has it such that General Physicians (GPs) in particular hardly charge their consultation fees and compensate this with medicines sold at the clinic. When it comes to separation of dispensing (which may eventually be implemented in Malaysia following developed countries like US or UK), things will change as GPs may have no choice but to charge their consultation fees and patients collect medicines from pharmacies.
At a time when everything is going up in price (tolls, food, fuel etc) this would seem like a bad time and one can understand the outcry: Higher medical bills after hush-hush hike by gov’t. Actually one can understand 12 years is a long time for any medical consultation fee increase.
Before anyone goes doctor bashing, do note
1) The bulk of medical fees for hospitalisation comprise hospital charges which remain unregulated to date.
2) The amendment to the fee schedule only affects doctors whose fees remain regulated by law.
3) The public must take note that they should have healthcare insurance which is unfortunately still not compulsory in this country. This is imperative as it is silly to have to pay out of your pocket when major illness strikes.

Oklahoma State University’s Center for Health Systems Innovation (CHSI), through its Institute for Predictive Medicine (IPM), is a leader in the exploding field of predictive medicine thanks to the unprecedented donation by Cerner Corporation of its HIPAA-compliant clinical health database, one of the largest available in the United States. Specifically, this dataset represents clinical information from over 63 million patients and includes admission, discharge, clinical events, pharmacy, and laboratory data spanning more than 16 years.
Over 20 full-time CHSI employees and nearly two dozen graduate students are working to execute the CHSI mission to transform rural and Native American health through data analytics. Further, CHSI has a number of ongoing partnerships with academia, health systems and corporations to extract value from digitized health data.
One example of CHSI’s numerous predictive medicine projects is an effort to help physicians determine whether the performance of particular cardiovascular drugs varies by gender or race, or both. Conversely, this study will help indicate which drugs perform poorly or even cause complications in these populations. Other CHSI studies are designed to give physicians insight into whether patients with a particular disease are likely to develop or already have an associated disease, which will aid in co-managing these conditions and lead to better health care. Another project is designed to help hospitals use data on patient demographic characteristics, comorbidities, discharge setting, and other medical information contained in comprehensive EMR systems to determine if patients are at high risk for being readmitted for disease-associated complications. If patients are considered high risk, they can get the care and support necessary to prevent frequent cycling through the health care system.
Predictive medicine can also lead to the creation and implementation of tools for managing larger patient loads, which can aid health care providers in dealing with supply-and-demand problems. For instance, CHSI has developed a clinical decision support system that can detect diabetic retinopathy with a high degree of accuracy using lab and comorbidity data available through primary care visits. This algorithm addresses the very real challenge of low patient compliance, particularly among rural and underserved populations, with annual ophthalmic eye exams, which are the gold standard for retinopathy detection and preventing vision impairment or total vision loss. CHSI is extending this work to other common diabetes-related microvascular complications with the goal of developing a comprehensive suite of tools that can help increase prevention and management of these complications among the nation’s growing diabetic population.
